Godzilla vs. Kong will be released in 2021 as a sequel to King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island.

Godzilla vs. Kong was initially scheduled for release on May 29, 2020, but was then moved back to March 13, 2020, then November 20, 2020, and finally May 21, 2021. It was subsequently moved back to March 26, 2021, before finally hitting US cinemas on March 31, 2021. The film was also available on HBO Max until April 30, 2021.

Adam Wingard directed the film, which was written by Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields. Borenstein, Dougherty, and Shields collaborated on the script. Godzilla and Kong square fight five years after Ghidorah's rampage in Godzilla vs. Kong, which takes place five years after King of the Monsters.

Following the assault, popular opinion has shifted against Godzilla, who is no longer seen as humanity's savior. Madison Russell, now an adult and a follower of Bernie's podcast, is concerned when she hears about Godzilla's latest assault at her school. After school, she attempts in vain to persuade her widowed father Mark (who is serving as Monarch's director) that she has a probable clue on the source of Godzilla's rampage, but he ignores everything she says, stating merely that beasts, like humans, may evolve. Later, Madison enlists the aid of her closest friend Josh Valentine to track down the person responsible for Godzilla's rampage and uncover Apex's secrets.

Meanwhile, Apex founder and CEO Walter Simmons engages Nathan Lind, a former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist, to assist them in their hunt for a tremendous energy source in the Hollow Earth, a subterranean planet under the Earth and the secret home of the Titans. Nathan is first skeptical, since his brother attempted to investigate the Hollow Earth and was killed by a powerful anti-gravity field within the tube. He ultimately accepts when Walter explains that Apex has constructed Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, customized ship capable of withstanding the gravity field's pressure.

Because Skull Island can no longer accommodate him (due to Kong's massive size), Nathan offers that they employ Kong as a navigator to guide them to the energy source. When Nathan persuades Ilene to assist in putting a stop to Godzilla's rampage and finding Kong a new home, she agrees to do so.

Their struggle is broken up, however, when Godzilla is distracted by depth charges, allowing Kong to surface for air.

Seeing no other choice, Nathan determines that the party should instead turn down all of the ships' engines to fool Godzilla into believing he destroyed them and Kong was vanquished, which finally works. Godzilla looks at the wrecked fleet with interest and swims away, assuming he has won. Realizing that if the ships are reactivated, Godzilla would return, the party decides to fly Kong to a Hollow Earth entrance site in Antarctica, where Ghidorah was initially frozen. Jia explains to Kong that his home is beyond the door, but he is hesitant to proceed.

The three disembark and find themselves inside a vast black cavern, where they come face to face with Apex's ultimate weapon, "Mechagodzilla" a mechanical version of Godzilla piloted by the late Dr. Ishiro Serizawa's son, Walter's top technological officer Ren Serizawa. Walter sends a gigantic adult Skullcrawler nicknamed "Number 10" into the chamber to test Mechagodzilla's strength against the Titans as soon as the mecha is turned on. The Skullcrawler is on the brink of assaulting Madison, Josh, and Bernie when it is caught and imprisoned by Mechagodzilla, who uses a tremendous red energy beam to cut the Skullcrawler in two, enabling Madison, Josh, and Bernie to take refuge in a tiny hatch. However, owing to power supply limits, the test is cut short when the mecha shuts down right after.

Kong and Nathan's crew discover a similar habitat to Skull Island in the bowels of the Earth. One of the HEAVs is wiped out by a pair of Warbats while they're out in the open. When Kong killed the first Warbat, he swung its body into the second one, knocking it out, but the monster regains consciousness and tries to ensnare him in a tight embrace. Nathan's squad in their HEAV launches missiles at the Warbat before Kong can smother it, allowing him to break free and pummel the beast to death before devouring its intestines.

Afterwards, Kong and Nathan's crew begin their trek to a massive stone temple that formerly belonged to Kong's ancestor. A remnant of a long-ago conflict between Kong's and Godzilla's races is discovered within, and Kong is surprised to see an antique axe crafted from the skull of a slain Godzilla member before settling into a massive seat of power. Power sources that enhance Mechagodzilla's supply are discovered by Nathan's crew, however the same sources may also be used to replenish Kong's weapon. But Maia and the Apex crew employ spider-like drones to collect the power supply and return it to Hong Kong, even if Ilene protests that Apex cannot just steal the discovery of the century. A furious Kong yells in defense of his squad as Maia orders her guards to fire their rifles directly at Nathan and his comrades. A signal from Mechagodzilla is received by Godzilla, who immediately sets off towards Hong Kong, sensing the activation of the machine.

Walter orders Ren to send Mechagodzilla to Apex HQ to destroy Godzilla. Despite Ren's warnings not to use the new Hollow Earth energy source without testing, the mecha is activated. Bernie, Madison, and Josh are also apprehended by security guards and brought to Walter. While Walter denies stirring Godzilla's war and causing the whole situation, Madison accuses him of admitting responsibility for allowing mankind to face Godzilla and the Titans.

When the energy source and Ghidorah's brain networks affect Mechagodzilla, the robot goes berserk, murdering Walter with a sweep of its hand and electrocuting Ren when Walter's back is turned while he talks about his invention. Ghidorah's mind has now taken control of Mechagodzilla, which escapes from the Apex facility under Victoria Peak Mountain and attacks the city before Godzilla can stop it. Prior to engaging Godzilla, Mechagodzilla launches a salvo of missiles at its biological counterpart to close the gap.

Kong watches Godzilla battle Mechagodzilla on his way to visit Jia. Kong first doubts Jia as he sees Godzilla smash Mechagodzilla, but Jia ultimately reveals that the robot is the "real" danger. Before joining the battle to help Godzilla with his dislocated leg, Kong accepts and puts his animosity aside.

As Mechagodzilla prepares to fire its crimson energy beam into Godzilla's throat, Kong jumps atop the robot and deflect the beam into the air, thereby sparing Godzilla's life. Godzilla assists Kong in his struggle against Mechagodzilla after realizing Kong saved his life and recognizing an ally in him after witnessing that he is not an opponent.

Despite the titanic efforts of the two Titans, the robot ultimately triumphs. Mechagodzilla attempts to impale Kong with its tail drill, but Kong's axe has lost its charge and he manages to escape. There is nothing Bernie and the others can do for Kong or Godzilla, so he proposes that they drink. Bernie's flask is stolen by Josh, who has an epiphany, and he spills the contents of the flask over Mechagodzilla's control panel, forcing the creature to halt and enabling Godzilla and Kong to regain control of the battle.

The first Godzilla film directed by Terry Rossio, based on an unproduced story from 1994.

Chandler has appeared in every King Kong film, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and every crossover movie between the two.
